In a repeat of last year’s final, Chile won the 2016 Copa America Centenario in the early hours of Monday morning, beating Argentina 4-2 on penalties in New Jersey.
And the heartbreak was too much to take for Lionel Messi, who then announced his retirement from international football.
After 120 minutes without goals, the decider went to a penalty shootout. Despite missing their opening kick when Arturo Vidal saw his shot saved by Sergio Romero, Chile converted all of their remaining penalties and retain the Copa America trophy.
Messi blasted his penalty kick high over the bar, before Lucas Biglia saw his attempt well saved by Chile’s goalkeeper and Messi’s Barcelona team-mate, Claudio Bravo.
The match was bitty and somewhat violent, with few clear-cut chances and many cards.
Both sides were also reduced to ten men in the first half, with Marcelo Diaz and Marcos Rojo seeing red for Chile and Argentina, respectively.
Spain will play Italy in the last 16 of Euro 2016 after a late Croatia winner condemned them to second in Group D.
Spain took the lead when Cesc Fabregas dinked the ball over keeper Danijel Subasic and Alvaro Morata tapped in.
An Ivan Rakitic lob hit the woodwork for Croatia, who equalised when Nikola Kalinic turned in Ivan Perisic’s cross.
Subasic saved a Sergio Ramos penalty and Perisic’s late winner gave Croatia, who finished top of the group, a tie against a third-placed qualifier.
Perisic lashed in an 87th-minute shot in a thrilling match to inflict Spain’s first defeat in 15 games at the European Championship since losing to Portugal in Euro 2004.
Croatia will now play on Saturday in Lens, while Spain’s mouth-watering tie against Italy – a repeat of the 2012 final – will take place on Monday in Paris.
The 1991 European Cup Final was a football match held at the Stadio San Nicola in Bari, Italy, on 29 May 1991, that saw Red Star Belgrade of Yugoslavia defeat Marseille of France in a penalty shoot-out. After normal time and extra time could not separate the two sides, the match was to be decided on penalty kicks. Manuel Amoros’s miss for the French side proved crucial, as Red Star held their nerve to win their first European Cup.
Red Star arrived in Italy unusually early, on Thursday, 23 May 1991, six full days ahead of the final. The team set up base in the town of Monopoli, 40 kilometres (25 mi) south-east of Bari. There they stayed in Il Melograno Hotel and trained at the facilities of A.C. Monopoli. Due to a lot of interest from richer European clubs already being raised for the future services of young Red Star players, the club management tried to ensure its footballers were fully focused on the task at hand. The players were placed in semi-quarantine immediately upon arrival in Italy, which meant being separated from wives and girlfriends without the ability to receive incoming phone calls in hotel rooms, though able to make outgoing calls.
Over the coming days, the club also organized for a large entourage consisting of former players and coaches, friends of the club, etc. to arrive in Bari in order to watch Red Star in its very first European Cup final. Therefore, club legends Rajko Mitić and Dragoslav Šekularac, notable former players Srđan Mrkušić, Stanislav Karasi, club’s former coach Miša Pavić along with Serbian celebrities and public personalities such as Ljuba Tadić, Ivan Bekjarev, Bora Đorđević, etc. made their way to Italy.
